Ms America And The Offing On Oahu- Diana Dempsey

A beauty queen’s quest to be appreciated for her brains as well as her looks. Happy Pennington has just been crowned Ms America- but possibly only because the favourite was murdered during the final. With this making her a suspect, Happy takes matters into her own hands to clear her name.

Kooks for your Kindle?– The usual selection of supporting characters, including a typically adorable Ms Congeniality and a slightly batty mother, not too over the top.

The Bella-Swan-Pathetically-Self-Sacrificing-Factor– Phew, not a whiff of it here; Happy is on a mission to prove how resourceful and clever she is. Unfazed by danger, she doggedly sets out to clear her name and subvert the stereotype of the dumb beauty queen, while respecting the hard work she and her colleagues put into pageanting.

Painting a picture for your paperback?– It’s doubtful that anybody needs any encouragement to go to Hawaii, but you are guaranteed to feel the urge to sip a well decorated cocktail at sunset having read this book. The setting is mostly at the plush hotel, with some eventful excursions. The author has a lovely way with words, of course that’s what we take for granted in an author, but Dempsey has a singular way of conveying the intelligence behind the pretty exterior of the lead character.

Nookie for your Nook?– This being a pageant for married women, our heroine has her husband along, but most of the time he is stashed out of the way in another hotel and largely forgotten. Fortunately he seems extremely understanding.

Evaluation of your eBook?-. A character with potential (a sequel is already out there), with echoes of the Miss Congeniality movie. There are shades of Stephanie Plum in her amateur, plucky efforts at crime solving, but different enough to set it apart. It reduced speed at one small point in the middle, but still skipped along well for a medium size read. Best devoured on a beach, because it WILL invoke the urge for the aforementioned cocktail.

Three Wishes- Stephanie Bond

I found this author while searching for cheap eBooks, and uncovered a goldmine by a very prolific lady. Ladden the antiques dealer acquires a mysterious carpet along with a lamp. Not long after this a strange man seems to make things happen for Ladden and his favourite customer Jasmine. Unfortunately Jasmine is already involved with a prominent local figure up for re-election. Three Wishes is one of her shorter books and has a light-hearted supernatural element, which together give the impression of a vacation read. A little suspension of belief never did anyone any harm and it’s a sweet story.

Nookie for your Nook?– Yes, it’s fair to say your sunglasses will steam up by the end of the book.

Kooks for your Kindle?– Other than the two leads and the crack-pot bestower of the titular wishes, there are few other characters, but all with their part to play.

The Bella-Swan-Pathetically-Self-Sacrificing-Factor– The male and female leads share the book equally, and while our heroine Jasmine is a little bit timid and similar to the leading lady in Almost a Family, her male counterpart has more to do and is more thoroughly depicted.

Painting a picture for your paperback?– The main theme explored is family, he has a large close one and she has none.

Evaluation of your eBook?– Places firmly at the frothy end of the scale, not overly memorable, but a pleasant, fun read. Short and sweet! Recommended for summer holidays.

One For The Money- Janet Evanovich

An oldie but goodie. Ironically I didn’t read any of hers for the longest time because I found the covers a little too frothy, but this proved to be well worth a read! Stephanie Plum has lost her job as a lingerie buyer and is in dire financial straits. However family connections and a little harmless blackmail land her a job as a bounty hunter, where she soon finds that her first potential catch is an old flame. Who she hasn’t spoken to since she intentionally ran him over and broke his leg. It’s essentially a crime/mystery story, and the narrative occasionally has the punchy feel of a 70s detective novel, but it’s undoubtedly aimed at women.

Nookie for your Nook?– Not too steamy at all, but it’s foreshadowed for future books.

Kooks for your Kindle?– Most of the characters are larger than life, some hugely so (Granny Mazur!). They would seem over the top in real life, but they work well here and there is a large variety.

The Bella-Swan-Pitifully-Self-Sacrificing-Factor– Pleasantly absent here, the heroine is strong, resourceful, brave and optimistic. Even in desperate situations she is able to pick herself up and make the best of it, without being annoyingly chirpy. While Stephanie does require some rescuing when she first begins, she relies on the men less as she progresses and soon finds her calling.

Painting a picture for your paperback?– A vivid image of New Jersey is skillfully conveyed, by someone who clearly loves the area despite its industrial, polluted environment.

Evaluation of your eBook?– It’s classed as absolute froth here, certainly well written and unputdownable froth. A thoroughly enjoyable easy read and quite short. We already know it’s the beginning of a series, the crime story is wrapped up within this book, but the personal stories promise to roll along. I’ll get to the sequels soon!

Ten Years On – Alice Peterson

It couldn’t get any worse for Becca, her husband has been killed in an accident and she subsequently discovers she’s pregnant. In a reluctant backwards move, she moves in with her parents for the duration of her pregnancy. Back in her hometown, she discovers a former college friend of both her and her late husband, leading her to face the events of their past before she can contemplate her future. Despite this, the book is not at all morbid, only poignant, positive and a good medium sized read.

It’s nicely structured for the main part, interspersed with flashbacks revealing the mystery of the conflict of the two leads. Although the book plays out to the expected conclusion, there are some unpredictable hurdles.

Nookie for your Nook?– Not steamy at all, but plenty of love.

Kooks for your Kindle?– Many supporting characters, well depicted and a wide selection, although some seemed overly similar to those in her previous book Monday to Friday Man.

The Bella-Swan-Pitifully-Self-Sacrificing-Factor– Becca is reasonably self-sufficient, despite her dire circumstances.

Painting a picture for your paperback?– The insight into the world of wine is unexpectedly interesting, but other than that, the characters are the heartwarming setting. There is one minor supernatural element, which might sound out of place, but it fits.

Evaluation of your eBook?– Well written, not totally frothy but easily read. The time jump near the end doesn’t quite seem to work, it’s a little jarring, but doesn’t detract from the overall verdict. Good satistfying character development.
